My name is John Trueblood. I am from Omaha, Nebraska, and I attended
Elkhorn South High School. I have an older brother and a younger sister. I play
basketball here at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Basketball is easily my favorite thing to do
in my free time, but I do also love to golf.
My biggest accomplishment thus far in my life is winning the 2015 State
Basketball championship. It was my
senior year, and that made it so much more special. However, the real reason it was so special to
me was because my junior year of high school, our high school team was really
good. In fact, we were 25-0 at one point.
We entered the state tournament 24-0, won our first game, and
unfortunately lost our first game of the season in the semifinals. The worst part
about losing was not only that we couldn’t win state or go undefeated, it was
that we lost to a team that we beat 2 times already that year, and they were
our rival. When we lost a lot of our
team from the previous year, everyone said that there was no way we could win
state now and that was our only chance to do it. I took that personal because I knew we could
do it, and with everyone doubting us, it was so special to shut everyone that
didn’t believe in us up.
I like to think I am I nice person.
I try to be as nice to everyone as I can.
It takes a lot for me to not like someone. One interesting thing about me is that I am
an extremely loyal person. If you want me to not like you, talk bad about my
close friends or my family. Another
thing about me is that I am a huge dog lover.
I want about 4 dogs when I am older with a ton of land so they can run
around all the time. I think the cutest
dog is an English Bulldog, which not too many people seem to have the same view
as me on that.
Typically,
I am a good student. I wouldn’t say I am
really smart, but I like to get good grades by studying. I am very good with numbers. I love math,
but I am one of the slowest readers
ever. I get easily distracted when it
comes to reading. I could read 10 pages before realizing that I had no idea
what I was reading the whole time. I am
not particularly good at English, but I will say I have gotten a lot better over
the past two years. As a writer, I was never really great at it. I get stuck
all the time, and it is tough for me what to decide to write next. Fluency is
also a huge problem with my writing. It’s
tough for me to come up with ideas as the paper gets longer and that creates a
problem in flow of my papers. The reason I have gotten a little better,
however, is that I just took a composition class my last semester of high
school. in that class, we focus a lot on
how to become a better writer and to take your own views on topics and make a
conscious effort to think about them from the other side. I got a lot better at recognizing my opinion
is not always right, which was tough to swallow. Also, we wrote a 6-page
research paper on a topic of our choice. I wrote mine on how busy the college athletic
schedule is and why they should receive some compensation. It is a heavily
disputed topic in today’s world, and I took a big interest in it.
I'm glad to read you had such a beneficial writing experience in your high school class! I hope this class will help you become even more aware of yourself as a writer. I also have the problem of getting distracted when reading. I find listening to what I read helps me pay better attention, as does dictating what I'm writing help me with fluency.
